MY NEW BOOK!!
FINALLY IT'S HERE...THE BOOK ON AUTISM I'VE BEEN WRITING FOR 4 YEARS!!
It's been a labour of love, and sometimes hate, but I finally uploaded my new book to Amazon on the 18th October 2018.
And, as it says in the book's description, I have told the somewhat unusual story of how I started off in the world as a barely functional child: misdiagnosed with schizophrenia in the late 1960's, only to be told in 2008, at the age of 48, that what I have is actually high functioning autism.
Other topics I cover in the book, are those frequent co-morbid devils: depression, anxiety and OCD. In fact, I have yet to meet anyone on the autistic spectrum who does not also suffer from a mental health issue!
What this book isn't, is a prescriptive list of 10 ways to treat/cure autism. There are lots of books around that profess to give definitive steps on how to do things.
Instead, I have told a story of lived experience. I tend not to believe in anything that tells me how to achieve a better life in x-amount of precise steps. I don't think life works like that for anyone: whether autistic or neurotypical.
What my book is... is a sort of how not to guide for people with autism, depression, anxiety and OCD. It's about finding a way of life that works for you. Realizing that there is always something better around the corner–however bleak life seems at times.
The most psychologically damaging thing we can do to ourselves, is too compare our lives with those who seem to have everything we think we need: money, a great job, a fast car etc... Trust me, I know, I spend my every waking moment wishing I had better mental health, more money, a big house in the country, I may well achieve these things one day, but for now, I just have to focus on feeling good about what I've already achieved in life: despite having autism and apparently severe, unfixable mental health disorders.
Anyway, I feel good about finishing my book, and I hope you'll all enjoy reading it, and perhaps even relate to what I've written.
That's all for now folks! Steve
